The Impact You Create
For my first job after college. I'd gotten a supervisory job in a hospital through a mentor. I remember sitting in the cafeteria during a break with a senior official. I don't recall the context of the conversation, but I remember saying that I would never do anything to unjustifiably harm someone else. His response was that he believed that I wouldn't do so intentionally.
I got the job through connections. When I came onboard I discovered that someone who expected to get it was really disappointed. I assumed at the time that is what he was referring to.
But the conversation has stayed with me even decades later. And now I realize I probably missed what he was really trying to tell me.
It wasn't really about whether my intentions would be questioned.
What he left unsaid that continues to work on me is what comes next when you know or find out that the outcomes of your actions carry unintended consequences. Not that I walk through life callously. But especially lately, I wonder if I think about it enough.
I wonder about any hurt caused by my words, especially when I call it like I see it. I wonder about it when I use artifical intelligence.
These are choices made with no ill intention. But I've been asking myself lately. What is my responsibility when I become aware of the unintended consequences of my actions and how do I meet it?
Mindful Invitation: Is there a place where finding out the impact of your choices has changed what you do next?
