Permission to Pause: Reclaiming Rest in a Culture That Rewards Hustle
May 27, 2025
When your work revolves around others — clients, patients, students — it’s easy to internalize the message that rest is optional. That if you just push through this week, this case, this semester, then you can catch your breath.
But in high-responsibility professions (and life in general), there’s always another demand waiting. True restoration doesn’t come at the end of a never-ending list — it comes from the small, intentional pauses we allow ourselves within the work.
Rest is not laziness. It’s strategy. It’s care. It’s what allows you to show up with clarity, presence, and resilience — not just once, but again and again.
I invite you to try this grounding cue for the week. Choose one physical cue during your day to anchor your rest. It could be:
- The moment your hands touch the steering wheel.
- When you wash your hands.
- When you close a file or shut a classroom door.
- When you park the car and turn off the ignition.
- Before you attend a daily meeting.
Each time, pause. Feel your feet on the floor. Let your shoulders soften. Take three full breaths. Let the exhale last longer than the inhale. That’s it. That’s your micro-reset.
You don’t need hours to come back to yourself. You need presence.
