When Stress Becomes Inner Pressure

journal self care stress management Apr 22, 2026

Stress is inevitable. Responding thoughtfully to the inner pressure that builds when we are stressed can be hard.

Sometimes, you can proactively modify your behavior or mindset before the stressful situation has occurred. As an example, batching some meals for the week on Sunday reduces decision fatigue and the chances you will grab whatever is easiest to eat.

Of course, getting ahead of a stressor is not always possible. Life is not so neat. The question then is how do you make changes to your behavior or mindset during or after the initial stress has occurred. This could look like learning not to beat yourself up after eating the entire bag of chips while watching a movie.

Sometimes what we need to set the stage for a healthy response to stress is simply a short stretch of time where nothing is being asked of us and the mind has permission to slow down.
