Tight on the Inside, Guarded on the Outside
Mar 11, 2026
What are your days like? Full of back-to-back decisions, judgments, and transitions from one meeting, deadline, patient, or client to the next?
From my experience, it's rarely the work itself that wears you down the most.
It's all the stuff that comes with it.
The constant multi-tasking and shifting from one topic or task. The emotional load from not so easy interactions throughout the day.
I've been thinking about that a lot as I prepare Seasons of Stillness: Inner Pace Reset.
Constantly living in "brace mode", where you feel tight on the inside and guarded on the outside, can become the default without you even realizing it.
None of it has to be dramatic. It's mostly subtle.
Your voice may slightly rise. Your tone is a bit sharper. Your patience shortens when your kid doesn't immediately do what you said. Work takes more effort. You find yourself second-guessing more than usual. It becomes harder to respond or make decisions as thoughtfully as you'd like.
Your skill hasn't gone anywhere. It is still there. But the skills that require nuance and finesse, such as interactions with others, are harder to access. They take more of your energy.
Is this something you can relate to?
Reflection:
If so, I invite you to reflect:
How do you ensure you get quiet moments that actually feel like yours on days that are a lot?
What does (or could) that look like?
Only needs to be something small.
